Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of the New Hellenism history of the evolution of contemporary times, political movements, institutions of power, administration, political parties, military and educational systems.

Comprehension of all methodological tools for the understanding of Greek history, including administrative documents and records of simple reports, in order that the approach of the historical period can be possible. 

Application of all methodological tools in documents with the goal of understanding the relative archive material.

Analysis of the role of the historical sources in approaching the past.

Combination of each and often conflicting narratives of a specific matter, for the identification of different configurations of power.

Evaluation of the data that provide all the documents to allow interpretive proposals in approaching the history and language which are forming.

Teaching Approach

Interpersonal - Interactive presentation with support of supervisory tools, such as maps and archive documents.

Changes in Greek society in the 19th and 20th Cent. The 1821 Greek Revolution. Institutions and society. The Church of Greece. Educational systems. Greek administration. The role of the military. Political parties. Royal dynasties.

Possibility to study and analyze texts at home 

Teaching Methods

The course is based on a tripartite teaching method, with presentation, students’ discussions and editing historical sources that are given in class.

Criteria and Methods of Evaluation

Written examination at the end of the semester. The ability to comprehend study cases is evaluated with a gradual difficulty following the example of the trimester examinations of the American universities.
