Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of the discography’s and the music industry’s course and evolution using Greece as a starting point.

Comprehension of every kind of peculiar musical characteristic of each place and every kind of orchestra, as well as the aesthetic notion concerning the performance that defines the traditional songs from the 19th century and onwards. 

Application of these approaches on every kind of artistic expression of traditional music. Classification and definition of different idioms and types of orchestras.

Analysis of the consequences of the discography and the music industry’s creating traditional music. Analysis and application of the basic matters of artistic expression in regard to the local and the non local in the light of the aesthetic performance. 

Composition of historical, social, financial etc. reality with the formation and evolution of music industry. Artistic approach of aesthetic performances through time and space.

Evaluation of these data for the expression of interpretive proposals for the study of discography and the music industry in relation with traditional music’s evolution, as well as the realization of music performances based on local attributes and types of idioms .

Teaching Outcomes

Interactive presentation/lecture that is supported by hearing and analysis of selected music samples used as examples taken from discography. Group performance of musical examples based on music geography, the music genres and the orchestral typology.

Course Content

a) Record Production in Greece: The music industry, it’s history and coefficients. The presence of both known and unknown creators in Greek music industry, the formation of new waves and the cultivation of influences. Highlights in the history of Greek music’s discography.
b) Deciphering techniques and dating records data. Discography listings, discography recordings, Copyright Office. Peripheral networks transiting sonic material (VHS, etc.)
c) Greek and Universal traditional music record production: trends, issues and perspective.

The students are required to exercise on performing pieces of a specific or broader repertoire, that are included in smaller or larger music groups of various instrumental combinations. At the same time they exercise in reading quickly partitures, orchestral scores or else ’’sheet music’’ which has recorded musical subjects of a traditional repertoire, their covers or their original orchestration. The requirements concerning performance levels and performance diverse the courses’ levels. Music tracks are being analyzed, in acoustic version and in form of a musical text.

Learning Exercises

Home hearing, analysis and study of music examples from the indicative discography given in class.

Teaching Methods

The lesson is based on a tripartite teaching, with the participation of students in conversation and musical group performance.

Criteria and Methods of Evaluation

Written examinations at the end of the semester. The comprehension of all matters related to the study of discography and music industry (theory), as well as the ability of the interpretative approach and performance of pieces of music from a wide range of traditional repertoire (workshop).

Teaching Language
