Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of the history, the course and evolution of the traditional music review with an emphasis on the aesthetic perceptions that were developed.

Comprehension of the techniques for analyzing the determination of the genre in the field of traditional music, as well as the aesthetic perceptions of performing which determine such qualifications as "laiko" (popular), "entechno" (art popular), "laikotropo" (in the popular manner), from the 19th century and onwards.

Application of these approaches to the stylistic analysis of the relevant repertoire. Classification and definition of the different idioms and types of orchestras.

Analysis of the role of the aesthetic approach of traditional music in combination with the social trends and preferences. Analysis and application of the basic matters of artistic expression in relation to the local and the non local, in the light of the aesthetics of the performance.

Synthesis of the frame (historical, philosophical, social, economical) in which various aesthetic approaches are formed and evolute, as they were expressed through the relevant works of music. Artistic approach of the aesthetic of different performances through time and space.

Evaluation of these data for the expression of interpretative proposals for the study and interpretation of traditional music based on the aesthetic of composition and performance, as well as the implementation of music performances based on local idioms and eidology.

Teaching Outcomes

Interactive presentation/lecture that is supported by the analysis of music pieces selected in the basis of the aesthetics of their composition and performance. Group performance of musical examples based on musical geography, the music genres and the orchestral typology.

Course Content

Theory:
Traditional culture and new traditional ("neodimotiko") song. Rebetiko, "laiko", "elafrolaiko”, “skyladiko”, "entechno", "laiko rock". Collective aesthetic. Aesthetic of record labels. The “discovery” and “renaissance” of "dimotiko" and rebetiko during the last decades.

Workshop:
Performing pieces of a specific or a broader repertoire, in the context of small or larger music groups with various instrumental combinations. The student practice on new forms of expression based on original compositions, adaptations and orchestrations, which use the experience of traditional music as well as the peculiarities of traditional musical instruments.

Learning Exercises

Home study and analysis of music texts and notes given in class. Home listening, analysis and study of music examples from the indicative discography given in class.

Teaching Methods

The lesson is based on a tripartite teaching, with the participation of students in conversation and musical group performance.

Criteria and Mathods of Evaluation

Written examinations at the end of the semester. The comprehension of all matters related to aesthetic analysis of traditional music (Theory) is evaluated, as well as the ability of the interpretative approach and performance of music pieces from a wide range of traditional repertoire.
