Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of the history and developments of urban popular music in Greece, the styles and the distinct local musical idioms. Analysis of the major types of songs and compositions in the field of "traditional" urban music and finally, analysis of the basic music characteristics such as organology, melodic progression, rhythm, harmony, form, etc., in the repertoire of Estudiantines, Kafe-Aman, Rebetiko, Laiko etc.

Teaching Outcomes

Interactive presentation/lecture that is supported by hearing and analysis of selected music samples used as examples taken from an associated urban-traditional music repertoire. During internship, personalized essay subjects with the use of bibliography and discography.

Course Content

«Traditional» music in urban contexts such as Constantinople (Istanbul), Smyrna, Ioannina, etc. during the 19th and the 20th C. Discography and folk songs. Music practices and their historical and social context. Social representations and their aesthetic perceptions during different eras. Ideological issues (i.e.  preservation of traditional music). Traditional music today.

Representative forms and genres: presentation. Analysis of form, aspects of rhythm, melodic development, harmonic context. Genres examined (may vary from semester to semester):  Urban traditional songs from the end of the 19th C. Music from Smyrna and Istanbul. Rebetiko. Serenades. Light (elafro) popular songs, Archontorebetiko, new popular (laika) songs, new traditional songs. Rebetiko-Laiko musicians and composers.

Learning Exercises

Home hearing, analysis and study of music examples from the indicative discography given in class. During the internship, individual essay project assembly with musicological context based on the weekly essays, with open correction.

Teaching Methods

The lesson is based on a tripartite teaching, with the participation of students in conversation.

Criteria and Methods of evaluation

Written examinations at the end of the semester. The comprehension of all matters related to the study of traditional music culture (theory), as well as the ability of the detailed presentation of musical idioms (workshop).
