Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of the history, course and evolution of music study that had and has Greece as an emphatic reference point in traditional music.

Comprehension of all the writing techniques of a music review, of ideological perspectives as they were expressed through reviews as well as the aesthetic performing perspectives which define traditional singing from the 19th Cent onwards.

Application of all the above approaches in the analysis and reinterpretation of music criticism. Classification and limitation of different  developing idioms and orchestra  types.

Analysis of the role of music criticism in the framework of receiving and accepting music expression. Analysis and application of all basic artistic expression matters related to the local and the non-local in the light of aesthetic performance.

Composition of historical, social, financial reality among others with the formation and evolution of various ideological approaches as they were expressed in music reviews. Artistic approach of aesthetic performances through time and space.

Evaluation of the data above for the expression of interpretive study proposals and interpretation of music review texts in relation to the evolution of traditional music, as well as making music performances based on local and of genre idioms.  

Teaching Approach

Interactive presentations/lectures supported by reading and analyzing selected music reviews. Group performance of music examples based on music geography, music genre and orchestra typology.

Course Content

Music criticism as a source of music historiography in Greece. Relations of music criticism and aesthetics. Analysis of writing techniques and presenting a music review. Presentations of music reviews that are written in newspapers, magazines, special editions, booklets. Reviews of important Greek critics are analyzed based on a historical approach that comes from the field of scholarly and traditional music

The students practise music pieces of a specific or a wide repertoire, and they are placed in small or larger music ensembles of multiple instrument combinations. At the same time they practise in speed reading of music scores –“guide lines” of the traditional repertoire’s listed music subjects its music arrangements or even original orchestration. The demands of the level of performance and style rendition diversify the course levels. Music pieces, acoustic and written, are analyzed.

Learning Exercises

Home study and analysis of music reviews given in class. Home acoustics, analysis and study of music examples taken from the indicative discography given in class.

Teaching Methods

The course is based on a tripartite teaching method, with the participation of students, discussion and group music performance.

 Criteria and methods of Evaluation

Written examination at the end of the semester. The comprehension of all matters related to the study and scientific utilization of music reviews is evaluated (theory), as well as the ability to interpret and perform music pieces from a wide selection of the traditional repertoire (Workshop).
