Τhe Department of Traditional Music

The Department of Traditional Music received its first students in the academic year 2000-2001. It is part of the Faculty of Music Technology and is located in Arta. Apart from its highly rated teaching, the department has to present a number of diverse activities.

Within the five first years of its life the department hosted two international conferences - "Traditional music here and now" (2000) and "Fado and Rebetiko" (2002) - and a series of workshops and seminars. Events such as "Open Gates" happen every year and include concerts, workshops, exhibitions and other events.

The Lab for Instrument construction and the Centre of Technology and Culture play a major role in teaching and research related activities. An exhibition of folk traditional instruments and technology is close to its completion.

The Department is home to the Greek Music Collection, which holds a great number of recordings and relevant audiovisual material; the Collection is open to students and the general public.
